LANAP DENTISTRY
Periodontitis or gum disease affects thousands of people in the United States today. While it is easily treatable through medication and minimally-invasive techniques in the early stages of the condition, the latter stages require a more serious, surgical approach.
However, periodontal surgery may not be the right option for everyone. Sometimes you may be unable to have the surgery due to medical reasons, or you may not want to undergo this course of treatment.
But thankfully, technology has allowed dentists to develop a new, minimally-invasive treatment technique to address gum disease. This technique is called LANAP.
WHAT IS LANAP?
The LANAP treatment, also known as, “Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure”, is a specialized laser-based treatment that is used to heal gums and dental tissue, which have been damaged due to periodontal disease. In this procedure, your dentist will use a special laser to provide focused, minimally-invasive treatment targeting diseased tissue without affecting healthy tissue.
The laser beam breaks down the damaged and rotten tissues, while simultaneously stimulating the production of fresh connective tissues, bone, and collagen. A few weeks after the treatment, you will notice a dramatic difference in the quality and aesthetics of your gums.
WHAT IS THE LASER BEHIND LANAP?
The PerioLase® MVP-7™ is the laser that is used to perform the LANAP treatment. The PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser delivers a variable pulsed wavelength. The laser light penetrates 4mm beyond the surface of the tissue, effectively killing bacteria. This laser is also the world’s first-ever FDA cleared laser for periodontal regeneration.
WHY CHOOSE LANAP OVER TRADITIONAL GUM SURGERY?
The LANAP protocol offers patients numerous benefits, which traditional gum surgery does not. These benefits include:
- LANAP does not involve any invasive steps during the course of the treatment.
- Patients experience very little pain during and after the treatment.
- There is minimal inflammation and bleeding, which heals within a few hours.
- Recovery is much shorter with the LANAP, compared to other periodontal treatments.
- There are no foreign objects or chemicals introduced into the body during the LANAP protocol, making it very safe.
- Since there is no cutting or resizing of the gums involved, your teeth will look natural and beautiful after the LANAP treatment.
AM I ELIGIBLE FOR LANAP LASER THERAPY?
LANAP treatment is a highly successful and safe medical procedure. If you are suffering from moderate-to-severe gum disease you may be an ideal candidate for treatment and can especially benefit from this procedure. Even patients who are diabetic or hemophilic can undergo treatment with LANAP, provided they get approval from their doctors.
Additionally, there is no need to worry if you are taking any medication or blood thinners as part of other treatments. The PerioLase® MVP-7™ has been specifically designed to not adversely react against any chemicals in the human body. You can continue taking the medication even up to a few hours before treatment. If you have any questions regarding any medications you are currently taking, speak to your medical practitioner first for more information.
WHO IS NOT ELIGIBLE TO UNDERGO THE LANAP PROCEDURE?
LANAP therapy is an excellent treatment option for most patients with gum disease. However, if you’re unsure whether this treatment is right for you or not, then consult with a member of our team at Somi Dental Group. We will evaluate your gums and help you take the right decision.
We are a highly reputed dental clinic located in Boynton Beach, and we are trained and experienced in providing the LANAP therapy.
THE LANAP TREATMENT PROCESS
The LANAP protocol starts with your periodontist first taking an X-ray of your teeth and your gums. This is done to identify how deep the gum infection goes and where you need immediate attention.
Once the treatment plan has been outlined, the doctor will give you local anesthesia and start the treatment. The procedure takes place in the clinic itself. The dentist will focus a beam of laser light on the damaged tissues and break them down. The infection, old tissue, and dental debris are suctioned-off and discarded. Once the rotten and damaged tissue is completely destroyed, your dentist will use a laser beam of another wavelength to create blood clots in the areas of treatment and stop the bleeding and loosening of the gums.
The entire treatment takes two sessions of 2 hours each, with your dentist treating each jaw, one at a time. The heat of the laser light also destroys the bacteria in your mouth completely, offering you overall body wellness.

GETTING LANAP TREATMENT AS A SMOKER OR TOBACCO USER
Another advantage of the LANAP procedure is that it can be performed on regular smokers and tobacco users without a challenge. However, it is important that you know that your recovery period may be longer, and healing may be slower than other patients. This is due to the low connective tissue strength in your teeth and gums due to regular smoking and tobacco usage.
RECOVERY & CHECK-UPS
LANAP therapy is one of the safest and most hassle-free periodontal treatments. While you may experience minor pain, tingling, inflammation, and bleeding right after the treatment, these reduce in a matter of hours.
In fact, the LANAP treatment is so easy on your teeth that many people drive themselves back to work right after the procedure. Additionally, since there are no incisions and stitches to worry about with this procedure, you won’t even need to come in for recurring check-ups. Your dental professional at Somi Dental Group will monitor your condition after the procedure to ensure a safe and rapid recovery from the procedure. Any pain can normally be managed with over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen. Following treatment, you will be restricted to a diet consisting of liquids and soft foods for a period of about 2 weeks to assist in the healing process.
