DENTAL IMPLANTS

A beautiful, lasting smile

Unlike baby teeth, permanent teeth don’t grow back once they fall off. When a person experiences a dental injury that results in the teeth getting fractured or coming loose and falling out, they require a completely new set of artificial teeth to replace the damaged ones. This is where dental implants come in.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a tooth replacement procedure that consists of titanium posts and dental bridges. The titanium posts are inserted into the jawbone and bridges are mounted onto the post, creating artificial teeth.

Dental implants are a permanent tooth reconstruction treatment that helps fill in gaps in your teeth and restore a full set of pearly whites. Although they aren’t natural teeth, they look authentic, matching the size, shape, and color of your existing natural teeth.

At Somi Dental Group, we are a reputed dental clinic in Boca Raton, FL. Our highly-qualified dental surgeons have extensive experience fitting dental implants. You can count on us for premium-quality care.

Types of dental implants

Dental implants are differentiated according to:

Where they are inserted:

  • Endosteal implants
This is the most common type of dental implants. Here, the implants function as artificial roots for your teeth and are inserted right onto your jawbone. This option is used when you have sufficient bone mass in your jaw bone.
  • Subperiosteal implants
This type of implant is used when you don’t have enough bone mass in your teeth. Here, the implants are inserted above the jawbone, under your gums. They are light in weight and can be supported using minimal anchoring.

How many implants are used:

  • Single implants
If you require only one tooth to be replaced, then single implants are right for you. Our specialists will carefully fit the dental implant, making sure that the surrounding healthy teeth aren’t affected by the implant.
  • Multiple implants
If more than one tooth needs to be replaced, then multiple implants are inserted. Here, we use what is called an implant bridge – which is a titanium implant on which a special type of dental bridge is mounted. We create customized abutments and crowns that will be inserted on the implant to provide support and a better cosmetic appeal to your teeth.Multiple implants are ideal to replace from 2 teeth to the entire arc of 16 teeth on your upper/lower jaw.
  • All-On-Four implants
All-On-Four implants are a special type of multiple implants. They’re suitable for patients who find traditional multiple dental implants uncomfortable. You see, traditional implants can only support 2 to 3 teeth. This means at least 8 implants need to be inserted into your jaw if you want to replace the entire set of teeth on your lower/upper jaw. This can result in a long surgery that involves multiple treatments and it may be more painful than normal. The All-On-Four implants are a quicker, safer, and a less-painful alternative to multiple implants. Here, only four specialized implants are used to support the entire row of teeth. However, it’s important to note that only patients with significant bone mass in the jaw are eligible for the All-On-Four implants.

Who can benefit from dental implants?

Dental implants can be really helpful when:

  • You have lost your teeth due to an accident, injury, or dental infection.
  • Teeth loss is affecting your self-confidence and social life.
  • Your speech is being impacted by the missing teeth.
  • You are unable to eat the foods you like because of the missing teeth.
  • The missing teeth are affecting the shape of your face and causing it to sag.
  • Dentures are not right for you and you require a permanent set of teeth that look very natural.

Dental implant surgery is very useful and highly effective. Anyone above the age of 18 can successfully get dental implants.

However, you should consult our specialists about your eligibility for dental implants if:

  • You suffer from gum disease.
  • You are a regular smoker.
  • You have an immunity disorder.
  • You suffer from metal allergies.
  • You are young (typically under 17) and your dental bone growth isn’t complete yet.

Patients falling under these categories often find that their bodies reject dental implants or the implants don’t heal fast enough. Our dental surgeons will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your dental health and will advise you on the best course of action.

Do dental implants hurt?

A dental implant procedure is an invasive painful surgery. You will continue to experience minor pain for a few months after the treatment, but you can make this pain manageable by:

  • Using painkillers (we will prescribe these for you after the surgery).
  • Applying ice packs to the side of the face that hurts.
  • Adopting a soft diet that consists of pasta, vegetable puree, juice, and lukewarm soup.
  • Not doing any activity that causes you to grind your teeth or bite your lips.

The dental implant surgery

The dental implant surgery starts with a dental scan. A few days before the surgery, a comprehensive 3D scan is taken of your teeth, to identify dental abnormalities, gum disease, and damage to teeth. Our dentists will identify the teeth that require replacing and will create a custom surgical plan.

During the surgery, you are put under local anesthesia. Then, the teeth to be replaced are pulled-out. If your jawbone is too weak or doesn’t have sufficient bone mass, we will perform a bone grafting or bone augmentation procedure. Here, the bone graft is taken from the hip bone, because of its high density. If the hip bone graft doesn’t work for you, we can use a synthetic graft.

Once the grafting is done, our surgeons will start with the implants. We drill into your jawbone and the titanium post is inserted into the bone, where it will function as a root for the teeth. At this stage, the first part of the surgery is complete. You will need to wait for a few weeks for the osseointegration – where your jawbone fuses with the implant, giving it the strength it needs to support the dental bridges. These bridges consist of the abutment and the crown.

Once the implants heal, you will need to visit us again for the abutment placement. The abutment is attached to the implant and is allowed to heal for a few days. Then, the impressions of your existing teeth are taken on putty to create the dental crowns. These crowns are customized to the shape, size, and color of your natural teeth. It can take about 2 to 3 weeks for the crowns to be ready, after this, they will be permanently screwed onto your dental implant.

After the surgery, your teeth will look completely natural and once the implants heal, you can return to your normal life, without worrying about damaging your new teeth.

Caring for your dental implants

Once your implants heal, you can continue brushing and flossing as you normally do. Although dental implants and crowns don’t get affected by oral bacteria, other natural teeth surrounding the implants can still be infected if you maintain poor dental hygiene. This can cause problems for your implants by weakening your gums.
