WHAT ARE LUMINEERS?

Lumineers are a brand of veneers. They perform the exact same functions that traditional porcelain and composite veneers do – provide a beautiful and aesthetic covering for the teeth by covering:

  • Discolored teeth
  • Gaps in the teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Misshapen teeth

The Lumineers brand of veneers has been developed and manufactured by the company of the same name. In essence, Lumineers and veneers are nearly one and the same. However, they do have important differences. Understanding these differences will enable you to choose whether you want to go ahead with traditional veneers or choose Lumineers instead.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN VENEERS AND LUMINEERS

SIZE

Traditional porcelain and composite veneers are about 0.5mm thick, while the Lumineers are about 0.2mm thick. This makes traditional veneers bulkier than the Lumineers. This bulkiness of the traditional veneers may look out of place sometimes, making your smile appear fake.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Since the traditional veneers are so big, they can sometimes be bigger than your natural teeth. If this happens, the dentist may need to reshape and resize your teeth, in order to fit the traditional veneers properly on them. In some cases, the teeth may also need to be removed. This can be painful for some patients and may involve unnecessary stress, especially for children. The Lumineers, on the other hand, with their thin size, don’t require any such reshaping or resizing of the natural teeth and can be applied directly.

QUALITY OF CONSTRUCTION

Traditional porcelain veneers are made using regular medical-grade porcelain. Lumineers, on the other hand, are made of a specific type of porcelain called Cerinate. This material is far stronger than the conventional porcelain used for veneers, which makes the Lumineers very sturdy and protected against cracks, chips, and shape-loss.

This material is very long-lasting too. Some patients keep their Lumineers for up to 20 years without getting them changed.

PRICE

While both traditional veneers and Lumineers are customized to each patient, the price of both these types of veneers varies significantly. Traditional porcelain veneers are more expensive than Lumineers since they are customized to a far greater degree than the Lumineers. This can make the traditional veneers a costly affair for patients who don’t have dental insurance or who don’t wish to undergo expensive procedures. Research shows that traditional porcelain veneers cost between $925 and $2500 per tooth depending on the material used, degree of customization and the clinic visited; while Lumineers cost between $800 and $2000 per tooth.

HOW DO LUMINEERS WORK?

The Lumineers treatment starts with a consultation with one of our doctors at Somi Dental Group & Orthodontics. Dr. Lopez will take a look at your teeth to identify if Lumineers are the right treatment for you or if you need more extensive treatment. Once he’s established that you will benefit from veneers and Lumineers in particular, he will check how many teeth need to be fitted with Lumineers.

Next, he’ll take a mold of your teeth and send it over to the dental lab to construct Lumineers which are custom-fitted to your teeth. Your custom fitted lumineers at Boynton Beach‘s premiere dental clinic are made in-house. It may take up to a week or two for our team to get your Lumineers ready for fitting.

Once the Lumineers are ready, you will be asked to come into the clinic and try them on before they are permanently fitted. Dr. Lopez will check if the Lumineers fit perfectly over your teeth or if they are too large or too small for you. If the latter happens, he will take a second measurement to get a new set of Lumineers made.

However, if the Lumineers do fit your teeth perfectly, the doctor uses medical-grade dental cement to stick your Lumineers onto your teeth. The cement takes a few hours to set, and you are advised not to eat or drink anything during this time, to allow the Lumineers to stick in place.

RECOVERY CARE

Although the Lumineers treatment is relatively pain-free, you may still experience discomfort for a few days after getting it done. This is completely natural since the Lumineers are a foreign body and your body needs to get used to how they feel in your mouth. But, if the pain and discomfort are unmanageable, ask Dr. Lopez or Dr. Vasquez for a prescription of pain medication and use it as directed.

FURTHER CARE FOR YOUR LUMINEERS

If you have the habit of grinding your teeth when you sleep, then your dental professional at Somi Dental Group will prescribe a mouth guard. This is a plastic tray, which can be worn on your upper teeth which prevents your upper and lower teeth from rubbing against each other. Since Lumineers can still crack or chip-off due to excessive teeth grinding, its best to wear the mouth guard every day.

The Lumineers, just like traditional veneers, don’t stain easily. However, if you’ve had them for a few years and want to get them changed, it’s best to visit the dentist for a first evaluation and fitting.

At Somi Dental Group, we have extensive experience providing lumineers Boynton Beach has relied on for years. We are experts in fitting them for adults and children alike. Feel free to contact us to schedule a consultation. You can take a look at the work done by us on our gallery page.
