SEDATION DENTISTRY AND DENTAL PHOBIA
DON’T LET FEAR GET IN THE WAY OF YOUR ORAL HEALTH
The thought of a visit to the dentist can make many people uneasy. But for some, this fear is so strong that it warrants the need of some form of sedation before the dental procedure can be carried out. Known as sedation dentistry or sleep dentistry, this is a means to give people the peace of mind they need to have dental treatments done without the anxiety associated with them.
Sedation dentistry is, quite simply, dental work carried out under some form of sedation. It is particularly useful where a patient’s anxiety could prevent them from agreeing to undergo a vital procedure or where an anxiety attack midway could jeopardize the procedure.
At the very least such issues can interfere with the dentist’s work which is a highly precise task needing the utmost care and attention to detail. Any such distraction can hamper the results. Our sedation dentistry Boynton Beach team will do everything possible to ensure you are comfortable and at ease during your treatment.
When someone mentions sedation dentistry, you might wonder if it is only appropriate to ask for it if you’re having major work done. The truth is, for someone with a phobia or fear of dental treatment, even a teeth cleaning appointment can bring on pangs of anxiety.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
Depending on your requirement and the recommendation of the dentist, you could opt for one of many versions of sedation. It can vary from minimal sedation where you’re given something to relax you but are fully conscious; moderate sedation where you are conscious but sedated and less aware so you’re not able to really talk or remember much of what happens; deep sedation where you’re nearly “asleep”(unconscious) but not quite; and general anesthesia that puts you to sleep completely (the same one would receive undergoing heart surgery).
Laughing gas or nitrous oxide is administered by inhaling the gas via a mask. This form of sedation doesn’t put you to sleep but relieves anxiety and tension. Combined with local anesthesia it can make a dental treatment painless and free of discomfort.
DEEPER FORMS OF SEDATION
Intravenous sedation is given to you by injecting the sedative directly into a vein. Like laughing gas, you are conscious during the treatment but not as aware of what is happening. This dulls your senses and offers a deeper form of sedation to laughing gas.
Enteral sedation is taken in the form of a pill to swallow and may be used with or without laughing gas. This too, takes the edge off the experience, easing nervousness.
General anesthesia puts you completely to sleep so that you experience nothing of the treatment. It does, however, require some restrictions and preparation in advance, so find out more about this and stick to the regimen your dentist suggests.
