Restore Health to Your Gums

Gum disease or periodontitis can have a lasting impact on your teeth. Timely treatment is necessary to restore your gums to optimal health and protect your teeth. While medication and gum cleaning help, they aren’t as effective when you have severe gum disease. To treat your gums, you may need to undergo surgery to resect the damaged, unhealthy gums and preserve your healthy gums.

Surgery isn’t always the right choice for every patient diagnosed with periodontitis. If you cannot or do not wish to undergo surgery, then the LANAP laser gum treatment may be the right solution for you.

What is LANAP?

LANAP stands for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure. A cutting-edge laser dental procedure, LANAP will help eliminate affected gum tissue and restore your gums to health, all without invasive surgery. At Somi Dental Group, we use the specialized PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser to provide the LANAP laser treatment.

The PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser is an FDA-approved Nd: YAG laser that is designed specifically for LANAP. The laser directs 7 different pulse frequencies to the treatment site, to destroy infected tissue. These variable frequencies allow us to customize the treatment to ensure we get rid of the most deeply-embedded infection as well.

The biggest benefit of the PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser is how focused the treatment is. The laser only directs heat pulses towards the damaged tissues, ensuring your healthy gums and roots are safe.

The frequencies from the laser stimulate the growth of healthy connective tissues, which replace the rotten tissues that have been destroyed. After a few weeks, you’ll see your teeth and gums gradually looking better. Structurally your teeth and gums will become healthier until all traces of the bacterial infection are destroyed.

How gum disease affects your teeth?

Periodontitis occurs when there is an intensive bacterial accumulation on the surface of the teeth. Typically gum disease occurs due to poor teeth cleaning habits. The disease can have a very debilitating impact on your teeth. In the initial stages, there may be cosmetic changes, with plaque and tartar developing on your teeth. Then, your gums may blacken and your teeth start to completely discolor. As the disease progresses, the bacterial infection destroys the periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and the root cementum (the calcified material that covers the tooth root). Slowly, you may experience bleeding gums and your teeth may become loose, eventually falling off.

LANAP can prevent periodontitis from worsening by effectively eliminating the infection in the treatment site. The dentists at Somi Dental Group are highly-experienced in LANAP dentistry. We have a state-of-the-art laser dentistry lab at our Boca Raton, FL facility. You can count on us for premium-quality dental care. Contact us to schedule a consultation.

Benefits of the LANAP procedure

  • LANAP is a minimally-invasive procedure.
  • The treatment time is very short, typically two-hour sessions.
  • The laser pulses stem the bleeding, leading to minor bleeding after treatment.
  • There is no need for stitches and there’s no scarring.
  • Recovery is also very fast and you will notice visible changes within a few weeks.
  • There is less gum recession, compared to what is observed in traditional surgical treatments.
  • Teeth will look completely natural and there will be lesser post-operative teeth sensitivity.

Who can undergo LANAP?

The LANAP Periodontitis laser treatment can be undergone by absolutely anyone with moderate-to-severe gum disease. The laser pulses are very gentle on the gums, making it perfect for people with sensitive teeth and gums. The limited amount of bleeding also makes it ideal for patients who have blood clotting issues or are diabetic. Be sure to consult your general physician before scheduling the treatment.

The LANAP procedure can also be performed on smokers. The laser is powerful enough to eliminate not just the bacteria, but also smoking-induced black stains and gum decay. After the treatment, you’ll notice your teeth and gums look brighter and healthier.

The LANAP procedure at our Boca Raton dentistry

The procedure starts with a dental scan, where our dental surgeons will identify the severity of the gum disease and the sections requiring treatment. You will be administered local anesthesia to minimize your discomfort during the treatment. Then, the laser pulses from the PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser are directed towards the treatment site. As the infected tissue starts crumbling, our specialists will suction it out, cleaning your teeth and gums in the process. Once a particular area is treated, another laser beam is directed towards it to clot the injury and stop the bleeding.

There is no downtime right after the treatment. You can return to work immediately.

Caring for your gums after LANAP

LANAP stimulates the production of healthy gums and strengthens your jaw tremendously. Unlike surgery, where it will take time to return to your normal dental care practices, you can start brushing and flossing 7 to 10 days after the treatment.

It is recommended that you do not smoke, as the noxious gasses can prevent gum healing and decay your healthy gums. At least for the first few weeks, adopt a soft or liquid diet, to reduce the pressure of chewing while eating.
