What are crowns?

Your teeth comprise of tender pulp, that is covered by dentin and enamel. Sometimes, injuries and accidents can severely damage your teeth and expose the sensitive inside portion. This can ruin the appearance of your teeth and can cause intense pain when eating or talking.

Crowns are dental caps used to cover and protect the visible portion of broken or chipped teeth. They look very natural and resemble real teeth in coloring. Crowns provide structural support and cosmetic relief when:

  • Your teeth are decayed and are close to breaking.
  • Your teeth are discolored, cracked, or chipped.
  • Your teeth are misshapen due to dental diseases.
  • You have bridges that need to be held in place.
  • Your dental filling isn’t providing the relief you seek.
  • Your dental implant needs covering.

Although they look like real teeth, crowns are made from synthetic materials like metal, porcelain, and resin. The choice of the material for your dental crown depends on your needs and budget. Our dentists will be able to advise you about the type of crown you require.

What are bridges?

A single tooth that falls or chips-off can affect the strength and health of the rest of your teeth. This gap between teeth needs to be filled in as quickly as possible, to help retain the health and beautiful appearance of your remaining teeth. This is where bridges come in.

As the name suggests, a bridge covers the space between two teeth by filling in the gap left behind by missing teeth. Bridges are prosthetic teeth that are made of two or more artificial teeth that are attached using a special anchor. They completely replace the missing tooth/teeth. Bridges help to:

  • Prevent the gap from affecting your bite (especially important in children).
  • Avoid further inflammation of the gums and jaw pain.
  • Prevent conditions like temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder.
  • Stop the surrounding teeth from moving out of place.
  • Prevent problems in talking, eating, and breathing.

Bridges are usually fitted along with crowns. For every bridge that is fitted, two adjoining crowns are also fitted. This ensures that the bridge remains in place. Contact us for more information about dental bridges in Boca Raton today.

Custom designed dental crowns and bridges to suit your dental needs

The choice between getting a bridge or a crown depends on your unique dental needs. This makes both crowns and bridges very customized dental solutions. At our Boca Raton, FL dental clinic, we will do a comprehensive evaluation of your dental health and determine the right solution for you.

We start by taking X-rays of your teeth to identify the extensiveness of the damage. We test the health of your teeth and identify the extent of rot in the roots. Then we prescribe either a crown or a bridge.

Next, our dentists will take an outline of your teeth either by getting the shape on putty or digitally recreating the shape using a digital scanner. This will help us ensure that the crowns or bridges are in the exact shape, size, and color of your existing teeth. It will take about 2 to 4 weeks for your crowns/bridges to be ready, depending on how many crowns/bridges you need and whether you’re getting other dental treatments done, like implants. During this time, a temporary crown/bridge made from porcelain or resin will be fitted.

On the day of your appointment, our dentists will prepare your teeth for the treatment. Your gums will be administered local anesthesia to prevent any pain or discomfort. Then, the healthy teeth on either side of your damaged/missing tooth (called abutment teeth) will be filed, to make space for the bridge or crown.

Crown treatment
Our dentists may fill-in the decayed teeth with body-safe filling if there is severe decay and then attach the crown in place, using medical-grade dental cement.

Bridge treatment
If no dental implants are necessary, our dentists will remove the temporary bridge, clean the teeth underneath, and attach the bridge using medical-grade cement. However, if your abutment teeth are weak, we will use dental implants to create a strong foundation in the gums and then attach the bridge on top.

Both crowns and bridges are permanent teeth restoration/replacement solutions. They typically last for 10-15 years and won’t need to be replaced often.

Caring for your teeth after the crowns/bridges

One way to increase the longevity of crowns and bridges is to maintain good dental hygiene. Regular brushing and flossing help prevent the build-up of bacteria and reduce the chances of tooth decay. Our experienced dentists will provide a detailed teeth care plan, which will help you maintain your crown/bridge carefully.

The crown/bridge may feel strange for the first week or two, but as you get used to them, they become very comfortable. If you have any questions about dental bridges and dental crowns in Boca Raton or would like to get your teeth checked by our specialists, please contact us today.
